Shibori In the creation of arashi shibori, silk is folded in a chosen pattern, then bound tightly onto a pole with thread. The fabric is then compressed together, rather like pushing a shirt-sleeve up your arm, creating folds and valleys. Once it is wrapped, dye is hand-painted onto the fabric and it is dried in the sun or near another heat source. When dry, the work is unwrapped, the dye is heat set, the fabric is rinsed & ironed. An infinite range of patterns can be created through this melding of deliberate control and the random effects of folding, binding and compression.

I
choose to work with silk because of its sensual and luxurious appeal. I examine
every piece of fabric for flaws, pulls and stains before dyeing, and reject
any which do not meet my very high standards. I work
with several varieties of silk: chiffon, habotai, charmeuse, crepe de chine,
silk noil, sandwashed and jacquard. Even after years as a student of silk
and dye, I am constantly amazed at what they conspire to create under my hands.
